New York escapes to DEDON Island with Surface Magazine

For one night in March, the cool cats of NY escaped to DEDON Island, where DJ Cam Robertson of New Zealand spun sweet beats from the rooftop of CityCamp, guests crowded around the tiki bar for some DEDON Island-inspired cocktails and everyone took multiple turns in the Orbit photo booth, playing out their DEDON island fantasies.

Granted at the beginning of every year by London based Wallpaper* Magazine – the international design, fashion and lifestyle bible, the “Wallpaper* Design Award” is what the Oscars means to cinema and the Nobel Prize is to science. Five international judges with a supernatural sense of what’s right and right for right now choose the winners of the eleven major categories. The remaining categories have been nominated by the international Wallpaper* Team of staffers and contributors. The collection SeaX stands for elegance and modernity, for attention to detail and a wealth of innovative design solutions. It was always DEDON’s aim to discover unique places under the open skies, to live adventures and share unforgettable moments with family and friends, old and new, all around the world. And this vision came into sharp focus at DEDON’s Hamburg showroom recently, as more than 200 guests and team members joined together to celebrate the launch of DEDON Travel, the company’s very own travel agency, dedicated to organizing journeys to world’s greatest outdoors-oriented destinations. African drummers in colorful costumes helped arriving guests get warmed up, while a traditional stilt dancer entertained the crowd from high above. Welcome drinks were served in coconuts, a Tuk-Tuk was converted into a fruit buffet, and exotic foods from all over the world were prepared before guests’ eyes. The whole showroom was bathed in a warm, almost Savanna-like orange light, adding even more drama and allure to the oversized images of the new DEDON campaign, which is set on DEDON ISLAND, itself one of the magical destinations to be handled by DEDON Travel. The ‘barefoot state of mind’ cultivated by DEDON Travel was perfectly represented by the framed footprints being created on the showroom’s second-floor landing. By leaving the shape of their bare feet in a mix of sand and plaster, guests could immortalize themselves and take the spirit of DEDON Travel back home with them. Though it’s less than two hours’ drive from Tulum (and would be faster still on better roads), the inland town of Valladolid feels worlds away. For one thing, it has no beach. As a result, its has few tourists and only a handful of expatriates (more on that later). There are no signs for yoga or reiki healing. No scuba shops. No strip malls. Indeed, there are hardly any new buildings at all here. Whereas Tulum — pueblo and beach resort alike — seems to have sprung up overnight, relatively speaking, Valladolid has been around more than 450 years. Established in 1543 by the nephew of the Spanish conquistador Francisco de Montejo, and named after the capital of Spain at the time, Valladolid was originally built on a lagoon some distance to the north of its current location. The mosquitos and humidity proved insufferable to its original setters, however, and after two years the town was moved. There was just one problem with the new location: a Mayan town, Zaci, was already located there. This turned out to be a far greater problem for the Maya, of course, than it was for the Spanish, who dismantled the buildings of Zaci and reused the stones to build the new Valladolid. The sacking of Zaci was the beginning of a long and deeply troubled history between the local people and the newcomers. In 1546, the Mayas revolted and were brutally overcome by additional Spanish troops from the Yucatán provincial capital of Mérida. Some 300 years later, during the so-called War of the Castes, Maya rebels got their (temporary) revenge, driving government forces out of town and slaughtering half of them by ambush on their retreat to Mérida. Nowadays, its hard to imagine all that strife. Though the intricacies of the Spanish colonial caste system elude us, the people on the streets and in the stores of Valladolid seem to reflect a happy, healthy mix of Mayas, criollos (people of mainly Spanish ancestry) and mestizos (those of mixed blood). The town they all share is relatively well-off thanks to a strong agricultural economy and a growing tourist trade. From the outside, at least, life here is looking pretty good. In tribute to the harmonious spirit of modern Valladolid — or perhaps just because it sounds like a fun thing to do — we on the DEDON team decide to organize a parade on our very first afternoon in town. The idea is simple: With the help of our hardworking production team, we get together as many Volkswagen Beetles as we possibly can — in as many different colors — and cruise through town, honking horns and blaring music. Though its origins are German, the Beetle is Mexico’s most iconic car. Production began here in 1967 and discontinued only in 2003, making Mexico the last country to keep the Beetle — known here as the Vocho — alive. As our parade makes clear, Beetles of Valladolid, most of them heavily customized, come in all sorts of eye-popping colors. What better symbol for unity in diversity? The Vallisetanos seem to enjoy our parade. People come out of their houses and cheer us on as we weave through the backstreets. Kids follow us for kilometers. Even the local police who trail behind us, unsure whether or not to shut us down (in the end, they don’t), are having a good time. But no one’s loving it more than our producer, Christopher Schoenefeld, whose sitting on the window ledge of a chili-pepper green model, singing and shouting in his impressive Spanish. Chris has been on hundreds of productions for many of the world’s most prestigious brands, but I doubt he has ever been on one quite like this...

Click here and find out more Text by Alex Marashian Photos by Rainer Hosch Alaskan Dog-Sledding and a Picnic in the Snow Part of the fun of the Tour du Monde so far has been finding increasingly novel or unlikely modes of transport. Until today, we had gotten around by vintage Range Rover and 12-seater Cessna in Kenya, by classic sailing schooner in the Seychelles, and by gondola, ski lift, snowmobiles and helicopter in Megève. But this morning, we decided to take it even further with a day of Alaskan-style dog-sledding. After a trek in ice and snow part way up Mont du Villard, just outside Megève, we were met by our host and guide for the day, Bruno Cornali, a certified musher and the founder of this unusual attraction. Roaring up on his four-wheel-drive ATV (or all-terrain-vehicle, yet another new mode of transport for us), Bruno packed Team DEDON and our gear aboard and, in several trips, hauled us up to his facilities. Most remarkably, he also managed to mount an ORBIT lounger atop his little beast of a vehicle. On the snow covered field where Bruno does his mushing, a team of gorgeous Alaskan Malamutes was awaiting us. Not to be confused with the Siberian Husky, which it closely resembles, the Malamute was specially bred as a sled dog in its native Alaska. Though he can be a brusk with humans, Bruno seemed to communicate perfectly with these hearty, furry canines. The dogs hung on his every command, even when hauling an ORBIT full of passengers around and around their piste. It was Bobby, riding alone on the ORBIT, who appeared to take the fastest lap — until, that is, his ORBIT rolled off the sled, taking him down with it. When he hopped out from under the lounger, all in one piece, it felt like the right time to give the Malamutes a rest and enjoy a picnic in the snow. Baguettes, reblochon cheese, a range of salamis and meats, snow-cooled red wine and beer — fighting for survival in the Alaskan wilderness we were not. After our picnic, we moved the ORBIT to another part of the hill, where a long line-up of dogs looked on as our photographer, Rainer, snapped away. Uncle Seppi and Yannick Dekesyer joined our professional models, Scott and Sabine, in a number of pictures, but the true supermodels of the day were the beautiful Malamutes – two adults and two puppies — who hopped right in and handled their new duties with cool, calm and grace. I hope Anoushka the dog, whose modeling skills I lauded in a previous post, won’t be upset.

We wake at 5am and begin shooting at Loutier Coco, a secluded beach on the fair side of La Digue. It’s really a paradise. The sand is like a sprawling Tempurpedic mattress and the ocean, which I keep jumping into, a silky clear turquoise. The model’s--Nadine and Khi-- pose first on DEDON’s SUMMER CLOUD sun lounger and then on the canopied DEDON DAYDREAM bed. Things start to spin out of control. Khi is instructed to throw the ergonomic DEDON LEAF chair into the fierce shore break and try to surf it. (Being Australian he’s game.) Meanwhile, Nadine, emitting roller coaster screeches, is carted into the crashing waves on another Leaf. Tom is pointing like a crazed Marco Polo at a Flintstone boulder way out on a jutting cove. Land ho for a DEDON SUMMER CLOUD shot. The sunset photo shoot proves equally as gonzo. Bobby Dekeyser, DEDON’s owner has arrived from Switzerland to join the Seychelles leg of the Tour du Monde with his wife Ann-Kathrin and daughter Marie. (His son Yannick is along for the whole tour.) While the furniture is being set up on Anse Pierrot Beach, Bobby spies an elderly French couple with mad style lounging on some towels and invites them to join in as models. (They do). Then in a tribute to low-fi special effects Bobby climbs up atop the highest granite rock to simulate a neck breaking swan dive into the sand. The photo shows him preparing his leap on the massive boulder but not the little rock he actually jumps off of. Let’s hope tomorrow is less stressful.

Widely referred to as the ‘king’ of outdoor furniture, American-born Richard Frinier is credited with bringing luxury and sophistication out of the home and into the garden. He is known for his mastery of a range of styles, from modern to contemporary and traditional to classic forms. Over the years, Richard has been the recipient of more than 70 product design and career achievement awards, and, in 2009, he was the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the industry and his community, as designated and awarded by the International Casual Furnishings Association.

Dutch industrial designer Harry Hpj van Ierssel (1966) and his partner in life and design, the Cuban-born Chilean Camila vega Faba (1971), first met in 1994 at the Domus Academy in Milan. They gained their practical experience working in the studios of such renowned Italian designers as Mattheo Thun, Guido Venturini and Stefano Giovannoni before founding their own studio, the aptly named ‘Harry & Camila’, in 1998. The following year, the couple drew international notice at the Milan furniture fair, where one of their textile designs was selected for the International Design Yearbook, No. 15.

LEAF Product Testing

Frank Ligthart was born in 1971 in the Dutch city of Wijchen; he lives in Antwerp, Belgium. He studied product development at the Henry Vandevelde Institute at the Antwerp Academy in Belgium and industrial design at the University of Technology in Delft. Ligthart designed locomotives for the Dutch railway, and later – as freelance designer – furniture. Since 2001 he has worked for companies such as Brown Jordan, Grange, Garpa and Lambert. For his outstanding work Ligthart was awarded with several prestigious design awards, such as Design Plus Award (2003), red dot design award (2006), BIDA Award for outstanding design (2006) and a nomination for the German Federal Design Prize (2007). A Short Interview with Frank Ligthart. Q: What motivates you? A. To gain new insights, to find answers to questions which previously were never even considered, to create something that later evokes the notion: "How come nobody thought of this before?" Q: Where do you work? What does your workplace look like?A: My office is located on the first floor of an old house, with view of a beautiful small garden. The room has an old wooden floor and a high white ceiling. The office is relatively empty: two large glass table plates, a drawing board, "Aeron" office chairs by Herman Miller, and a cabinet. Q: What is the most difficult point during the creation of a new collection? A: To initially introduce a more complex idea to others. Even if one is firmly convinced, it nevertheless takes courage to introduce one's ideas to others Q: Your favourite city? A: Antwerp: the city is international, cultural, and not too big. Q: In your opinion, what is typical for the design of DEDON?A: DEDON has a strong form language and uses hardly any decorative elements. The picture is created by pure form. It is combined with a high degree of atmosphere, associative power, and pure pleasure. Q: What does it mean for you to design for DEDON? A. For me, the collaboration with DEDON means possibilities to go on exploration together with a great team, to find ways to support our changing life culture. Q. What is the function of design?A: To make life more beautiful. Q: What is special about your design? A: My designs convert a concept into a clear form, without superfluous decor. Q: What is the best designer piece ever? A: My Citroën DS: the DS is a car that revolutionised the automotive world more than 50 years ago. I love the clear lines, which represent speed, finesse and elegance. Another thing I love about this car is its associative power: It evokes the romanticism of France.

Design Talk: Nicolas Thomkins

Industrial designer Nick Thomkins first teamed up with DEDON back in 2003. Over the years, he has created some of our most iconic pieces, including the highly acclaimed YIN YANG collection of coupling sofas, which garnered the one of the world’s most prestigious furniture design awards, the red dot: best of the best (2007). Born in Ascona, Switzerland, to a family of artists, Nick studied fine arts and sculpture at Düsseldorf Art Academy as well as industrial design at the Folkwang Design School of Essen University. In 1983, he founded his own design office in England, followed by three additional offices —Lucerne, Essen and Cologne — in partnership with colleagues.
